Resident Veteran Hunting & Fishing License
Any Indiana resident who is service-connected disabled by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs may purchase a license to hunt and fish in the State of Indiana for a reduced fee.
In order to receive this benefit the veteran must complete the Application for Reduced Fee Hunting and Fishing License for Disabled Veterans available from County Veteran Service Officers, from the Department of Natural Resource offices, or from the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs. The form verifies that the veteran is service-connected disabled and authorizes the reduced fee and is verified by the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs. Ref: IC 14-8-2-228.3.

New law will reduce the price of hunting and fishing licenses for veterans

SPRINGFIELD, IL –Legislation sponsored by Senator Mike Jacobs (D–Moline) that will reduce the price of hunting and fishing licenses has been signed into law by Governor Quinn.

"This law will give a break to our veterans who have served our state and country overseas," stated Senator Jacobs, a member of the Senate Commerce Committee.

House Bill 3274 will allow a resident veteran to purchase hunting and/or fishing license at a reduced fee. The resident veteran returning from service must provide verification of service at one of the Department of Natural Resource's five regional offices. The Department is responsible for establishing what is to be considered suitable verification.

Monte,

Well done - your sponsorship of DAV's can only be applauded.  This legislation is a great beginning.  There is nothing "wrong" with anything or any piece of legislation that attempts to give back to the veterans who have willingly sacrificed so dearly in some many distant arenas to protect this country or its interests abroad.   I cannot pass legislation, only encourage those whom might be affected to call IDFG with support or suggestion.  That is the only way things can improve.  I too hope Idaho will expand or revise this program such that more DAV's can avail themselves of this wonderful benefit.  Personally, as a DAV, I don't want or need charity and many with whom I served feel the same way - we simply would appreciate the aforementioned "access" - if it is to be a real "benefit" to the non resident veteran.

Please keep up your good work - it is appreciated by all of us.

There are some vague parts of the legislation (HB143) that will preclude many Non Resident Disabled Vets from meeting the criteria.  Specifically, the "qualifying organization" criteria.   What IDFG seems to want is a third party "charity" - politics got in the way of the legislation.  I have yet to meet a DAV who wants charity, rather they want access, both physically and financially. We already "gave at the office".  The fee reduction would assist many DAV just to be able to afford the tags.   As written the IDFG program does neither conveniently.  Neither does IDFG seem to identify what/who is a "qualifying organization".  Unless the legislation is amended or the IDFG policy revised, many otherwise qualified Non-Resident DAV will not be able to avail themselves of what could be a great program.  Your letter from the VA stipulating a greater than 40% disability should be all that is required ..... but politics got in the way.   A letter or phone call to IDFG might just provide incentive for policy review. Options for Active Military Personnel
The Idaho Department of Fish and Game appreciates the sacrifices our active military personnel make on behalf of Idahoans and all Americans. As a small token of our appreciation we have some special programs for men and women who are serving in the military. Whether you are involved in combat overseas or defending freedom here at home we hope you will take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy the abundance of fish and wildlife Idaho has to offer.

Furlough License Fees
Fish and Game offers Idaho residents on leave from the military these discounts on licenses:

Military Furlough Combination
Hunting/Fishing - $17.50 (Standard fee is $33.50)
Military Furlough Fishing - $ 17.50 (Standard fee is $25.75)
Resident Fees for Nonresident Military Stationed in Idaho
Fish and Game offers resident fees on licenses, tags and permits for military personnel stationed in Idaho for at least 30 days.

Rain check/Refund
Any man or woman serving in an active military conflict will be eligible to receive a rain check or refund for licenses, tags or permits they were unable to use due to their deployment. For more information contact Fish and Game headquarters or the office in your region, or print a request form and mail it to Fish and Game Headquarters in Boise, Idaho.

Military Status Residency Affidavit
This document has been developed to allow new Idaho military arrivals to buy resident licenses once they have been in state at least 30 days. The affidavit allows the purchase of resident fish and game licenses/tags by active duty full-time military personnel, including his/her spouse and children (less than 18 years of age) living in the same household after 30 days of continuous residency in Idaho. It is only valid for 30 days after the date of issuance. Please see the Military Status Residency Affidavit for more information.

Member Monte Bruhn posted: " Just found out on 2/19/10 that the Idaho Legislature passed a bill in 2009 that grants disabled veterans (40% or greater) free licenses and tags. You can also apply for and receive most special hunt permit tags for big game. This is a very special gift on behalf of Idahoans as some of these draw hunts are one in forty plus odds. "
